Do you remember us?

Written by Venus Aradhya, 15, Washington

Do you remember us, our voices buried down

Pushed far beneath us until you can’t hear a sound

The constant echoes of the challenges we call

They resound back, making our hopes fall

Your lies, are they blankets to cover your fears?

From the cold truth you refuse to hear

You shove and push our thoughts away

But we won’t fall, no not today

Can you hear that boom?

That’s the sound of our determination like a cannon

Can you hear that crack?

That’s the sound of our resiliation like a firework

Because no, we’re just as worthy so stop trying to push us down

And no, we’ll come back stronger so you better watch out

You’ll remember us now, in the streets out voices preach

Every nook and cranny, minds of many they reach

Stronger than before, even our echoes break through

With our strength in numbers, there’s nothing we can’t do

The barriers we break down with our might

The changes we push and monsters we fit her

Try to bury our cries, you’ll only fail

Our ideas float above, like boats they sail

Can you hear that boom?

That’s the sound of our determination like a cannon

Can you hear that crack?

That’s the sound of our resiliation like a firework

Because no, we’re just as worthy so stop trying to push us down

And no, we’ll come back stronger so you better watch out

There’s no stopping us now that we’ve grown

How long did think it’d last till our strength was shown

You can push us, burry, muffle, and beat

But our tunes will resonate on repeat

Hold on to your thoughts cause here we come

We won’t stop again not for anyone

Our words are the wreckers of all your walls

Blocking us in hopes that we will fall

Underestimating is your mistake but you’ll see

What a world it’ll be when we’re finally free

Author’s note:

I wrote this poem about youth representation since I believe that youth are often underrepresented in our communities and that we are also often overlooked. This is the generation where we’ll show how we’re just as powerful and willing to fight for our own future, so it’s about time that others stop underestimating us.
